Aside from the scholarship, each fellow will receive a five-year research grant of Rs 2 lakh. The fellow will receive a five-year research grant of Rs 10 lakh. The scholarship will last until the end of the fourth year of Ph.D. for integrated course students, and until the end of the fifth year of Ph.D. for BTech or equivalent students. The grant will be extended to students selected through lateral entrance methods throughout the duration of their doctorate programme. There will be no reimbursement in the future. Industry participation in the PMRF programme will be investigated with the help of CSR money in order for the industry to sponsor fellows.

Prime Minister Research Fellowship Deliverables

  • At the time of joining, each fellow will be given deliverables that must be completed every year.

Changes to the Prime Minister’s Research Fellowship Program

  • Students from any university can apply for the Prime Minister’s research fellowship. Previously, only students from a few select universities were eligible to apply.
  • The GATE score used to be 750, however it has recently been decreased to 600.
  • According to the new rules, there will be two types of entry: direct entry and lateral entry.
  • Students who are pursuing a Ph.D. from a PMRF-granting university and have completed at least 12 months or 24 months, depending on the criterion, can seek to become fellows under the Prime Minister research fellowship system through lateral entry.
  • All National Institutes of Technologies that rank in the top 25 institutions in the National Institute ranking framework are eligible to receive Prime Minister research fellowships.

Eligibility Requirements for Prime Minister Research Fellowship

Direct Entry Channel

  • The applicant must be in their last year of a 4-5 year undergraduate program for a 5-year integrated M.tech or 2 year MSc, or a five-year undergraduate or postgraduate dual degree programme in Science and Technology from IISC/IIT/NITs/IISERS/IIEST and a centrally supported IIIT. On a scale of ten, the eligible candidate must have a CGPA or CPI of at least 8.0.
  • If candidates in 5-year integrated dual degree programs are given separate CGPAs for the UG and PG parts of the program, the UG part’s CGPA for the first four years will be used OR
  • The candidate must have completed the final year of a four or five-year undergraduate program, a five-year integrated MTech program, a five-year integrated MSc program, a two-year integrated MSc program, or a five-year undergraduate or postgraduate dual degree program in Science and Technology from an Indian university or institute. A minimum CGPA of 8 or equivalent is required, as well as a minimum score of 650 in the corresponding gate topic.

  • Candidate must have finished or be pursuing Mtech/MS by research at one of the listed institutions with a minimum CGPA for CPI of 8.0 at the end of the first semester with a minimum of four courses. For applicants applying after the first semester, the CGPA or CPI requirement of 8.0 will be based on all of the candidate’s completed courses, laboratories, and thesis.
  • They should apply for a PhD programme at one of the PMRF-funded institutes and get accepted.
  • The institute that accepted the student into the PHD programme should write a strong reference and upload the necessary information to the online portal. Students can apply for direct admission to the institutes where they have been selected and wish to enrol.
  • Research exposure, publication, performance in international competitions, grades, and a recommendation letter will all be used to evaluate the application.
  • The progress of the candidate will be assessed by the panel within 12 to 18 months following admission to the PhD programme, and the renewal of the fellowship will be contingent on the candidate’s good performance.
  • A compelling research proposal is expected of the candidate.

Lateral Entry Channel

  • The candidate must be pursuing a Ph.D. at a PMRF-accredited institution.
  • If he or she started the PhD program after earning a master’s degree, he or she should have finished at least 12 months in the program, and if he or she joined the Ph.D. program after earning a bachelor’s degree, he or she should have completed at least 24 months in the program.
  • From the date of acceptance to the Ph.D. program to the date of application for lateral entry, the time period will be calculated.
  • Through the lateral entry channel, each candidate will be considered at least twice.
  • If the course is a combination of MTECH, MSc, and Ph.D., the candidate must apply within 12 months of completing the master’s degree prerequisite.
  • Candidate must have completed at least four courses in the doctoral program and have a cumulative grade point average of 8.5 or above.
  • The institute where the student is enrolled should provide a strong recommendation for the candidate and submit all essential information, including a research plan and soft copies of publications, to the web portal.
  • It is not possible to transfer to another Institute.
  • In the next year, the candidate will not be considered for the Direct Entry channel.
  • A strong research proposal, publication, records, and grades should all be used to evaluate the candidate.

Important Points about Prime Ministerial Research Fellowship

  • The candidate must apply to the PMRF issuing institution for a standard PhD programme.
  • If you are chosen, the institute will nominate you if your candidature is discovered from the north.
  • At the start of the current semester, you must have been accepted into the PhD programme.
  • If you were already selected for a PhD programme, you can only be considered for lateral entry.
  • The nomination does not guarantee fellowship acceptance.
